NAYGN-UNB Nuclear Power and Beyond
The NAYGN – University of New Brunswick (UNB) chapter recently hosted Introduction to Nuclear Energy: Nuclear Power and Beyond, an educational and discussion-based event designed to introduce students from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds to the fundamentals of nuclear energy. The session aimed to build foundational knowledge while fostering open dialogue on the environmental, economic, and social dimensions of nuclear power.
The event provided attendees with an overview of nuclear energy basics, including nuclear power generation, historical development of nuclear technologies, and emerging trends shaping the future of the industry. By welcoming participants with varying levels of technical background, the session emphasized accessibility and encouraged questions and discussion across disciplines.
This event was hosted in partnership with Energy Exchange UNB and made possible through sponsorship from the UNB Chemical Engineering Department and the Centre for Nuclear Energy Research (CNER). The collaboration helped create a well-rounded program that bridged technical, policy, and economic perspectives.
A diverse panel of professionals shared their expertise and insights throughout the event. Panelists included Dr. William Cook, Chair of UNB’s Centre for Nuclear Energy Research and Chemical Engineering Professor; Mr. Brad McPherson, Director of Innovation at UNB CNER; Mr. Ryan Brown, EFIN Engineer at NB Power’s Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station; and Dr. Herbert Emery, Chair of UNB’s Political Science Department and Vaughan Chair in Regional Economics.
Overall, Introduction to Nuclear Energy: Nuclear Power and Beyond successfully advanced NAYGN’s mission of knowledge sharing and public information by creating an inclusive space for learning, discussion, and engagement. The event strengthened connections between students and professionals while promoting informed dialogue on the role of nuclear energy in a sustainable and resilient energy future.
