NAYGN Canadian Regional Conference: A Day of Innovation and Inspiration

On October 17th, 2024, the Ontario Tech University Energy Research Centre buzzed with excitement as over 170 attendees gathered for the NAYGN Canadian Regional Conference. This vibrant event brought together a diverse group of nuclear industry professionals, university students, and representatives from a multitude of companies and educational institutions, all united by a shared passion for nuclear energy.

The conference, themed “Nuclear Energy in Action,” aimed to champion the younger generation in the nuclear industry, showcasing innovative technologies and empowering attendees with the tools necessary to effectively engage the public through knowledge transfer.

To kick off the conference, attendees had the opportunity to participate in one of four exclusive tours on October 16th. These tours included visits to the Ontario Power Generation Control Room Simulator, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization facility, the McMaster Research Reactor, and the Ontario Tech labs and simulators. These tours provided a hands-on look at cutting-edge nuclear technology and research, setting an inspiring tone for the conference.

The day of the conference was packed with insightful sessions, including keynote speeches, panel discussions, and interactive workshops, all designed to foster knowledge retention and transfer, and professional development. The morning kicked off with a light breakfast and informal networking with exhibitors, setting the stage for a day of learning and collaboration. The opening remarks set a positive tone, emphasizing the importance of innovation and communication in the nuclear sector. Attendees were treated to a series of engaging presentations, including an Indigenous Knowledge Systems Fireside Chat, Nuclear New Build TED Talks, Isotopes Supply Chain Panel and Developments in Nuclear Waste Management.

Representatives from the Society of United Professionals, Bruce Power, Ontario Power Generation, AtkinsRéalis, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, Westinghouse, Forged Operations, GE Vernova, Kinectrics were present at the exhibitor booths, contributing to the rich diversity of perspectives and expertise at the conference.

Workshops throughout the day provided hands-on experiences, allowing participants to delve deeper into topics such as public outreach and engagement. These sessions included panels on Building a Successful Nuclear Career Plan, Nuclear Trades and Operations, Women in Leadership, and a keynote on How to Become an Effective Nuclear Advocate. These sessions were not only educational but also highly interactive, encouraging attendees to share their ideas and experiences.

The conference also featured a speed networking session, offering a unique opportunity for attendees to connect with industry leaders and peers. This session was particularly popular among university students, who appreciated the chance to gain insights and advice from seasoned professionals.

As the day drew to a close, the energy in the room remained high. The closing remarks highlighted the key takeaways from the conference and reinforced the importance of continued collaboration and innovation in the nuclear industry. To keep the momentum going, attendees went to the 2200 North Pub for the networking social to continue their insightful conversations throughout the day over food and drinks.
