University of Regina Chapter Launches with SMR Lunch and Learn

Article submitted by: Suganthan Boobalan, Chapter Lead, NAYGN University of Regina Chapter

The NAYGN University of Regina (UofR) Chapter officially kicked off in Spring 2025 with a SMR-themed Lunch and Learn session in collaboration with SaskPower and support from the Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS).

The chapter's founder, Suganthan Boobalan, took the initiative to help UofR students connect with industry professionals, gain valuable insights into the nuclear sector, and explore career opportunities. The event was held at the University and focused on Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies, project timelines, and key technical aspects of nuclear energy. It brought together undergraduate and graduate students, faculty members, and even the Dean of Graduate Studies! All attendees were eager to learn more about the nuclear industry and NAYGN.

Want to replicate this event at your chapter?

Here's what the UofR Chapter recommends:

We began the Lunch and Learn with the basics of nuclear fission, then explored the development of SMRs, project timelines, and regulatory processes. Afterwards, we held a Q&A session, which was a highlight of the event. The students asked such insightful questions and they clearly showed a strong interest in the nuclear field. Seeing such enthusiasm was a clear sign that this kind of industry-academic engagement is highly valuable.

We promoted our first event through Google Forms, posters, social media, and direct outreach to professors, which led to over 50 RSVPs! The turnout was fantastic, and with plenty of pizza, fruits, and drinks, the networking and atmosphere was lively and engaging. The event’s success reinforced the need for more such sessions, and we’re excited to keep building this platform to connect students with the nuclear industry!
