CNL x NAYGN Event at UofR

The University of Regina Chapter recently had the incredible opportunity to host the CNL x NAYGN Day, an event that brought together professionals, students, and experts from across the nuclear industry to share knowledge and strengthen connections. The day was filled with meaningful discussions and learning sessions featuring Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), SaskPower, Crown Investments Corporation (CIC), and the NAYGN – University of Regina Chapter.
Each organization set up an information booth that served as a hub for conversation and curiosity, creating an energetic atmosphere where participants could explore current projects, innovations, and future opportunities in the nuclear field. The event began with a series of technical seminars from CNL experts. Luke Yaraskavitch led a fascinating session on Reactor Physics, taking us through the operations of the Zero Energy Deuterium (ZED-2) research reactor and explaining how its lattice structure analysis helps advance our understanding of neutron behavior. Following him, Dan Cluff presented on Nuclear Reactor Fuel Types, explaining the enrichment methods, fuel processing techniques, and material considerations that go into designing efficient and safe reactor systems. Then, Megan Moore captured everyone’s attention with her talk on the Future of Advanced Reactors in Canada, where she discussed innovative designs such as molten salt reactors, high-temperature reactors, and plutonium-based fuels — all shaping the next generation of sustainable nuclear energy.
After a morning full of insights, attendees enjoyed a lunch session with representatives from CNL, University of Regina management, and the NAYGN team, giving everyone the chance to connect, discuss research collaboration, and reflect on the morning’s sessions in a relaxed setting. The afternoon continued with an engaging presentation from Gina Strati of CNL, who introduced ongoing bio and chemical research projects that explore how biological and chemical processes intersect with nuclear science. She also offered a valuable perspective on cybersecurity within nuclear operations, emphasizing the importance of protecting digital infrastructure as nuclear technology continues to evolve. On the Saskatchewan front, attendees heard from Arthur Situm, who delivered a clear and informative Nuclear 101 session for attendees who were new to the field. Crown Investments Corporation of Saskatchewan, represented by Abby Ojo and Breann Whitby, shared updates on current projects and provided insight into how investment and policy support nuclear development within the province. From SaskPower, Travis Sandeski and Sarah Klein Bentley presented on the siting and engagement process for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Elbow and Estevan, explaining how regulatory approvals, community input, and environmental assessments guide these critical decisions. The event also welcomed participation from University of Saskatchewan students, Saskatchewan Polytechnic researchers, and professionals from various industries, creating a diverse and collaborative audience. By the end of the day, it was clear that everyone walked away with a deeper understanding of nuclear science and a stronger sense of purpose toward advancing Canada’s clean energy future.
The CNL x NAYGN Day wasn’t just an event, it was a celebration of learning, collaboration, and innovation, showing how organizations like NAYGN continue to connect young professionals, promote education, and build momentum toward a sustainable nuclear-powered world.
