NAYGN México Regional Lead Presents at National Engineering Congress, Highlights Nuclear Energy’s Role in Regional Development

TORREÓN, Coahuila, Mexico (June 4, 2026) – Florencia Rentería del Toro represented the North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN) as México Regional Lead during the 1st National Engineering Congress hosted by the Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila (UAdeC), Unidad Torreón.
Her presentation, “Nuclear Energy in the New Industrial Era: Innovation, Talent, Energy Sovereignty and Strategic Perspectives for La Laguna,” examined the ways nuclear energy could contribute to the region's long-term economic and industrial development.
The session presented nuclear energy not only as a reliable source of electricity, but also as a strategic platform for industrial competitiveness, decarbonization, water security, technological innovation, and the creation of high-value employment opportunities. The discussion explored how these benefits could help position the La Laguna region as a future hub for industry, energy, and innovation.
NAYGN's Role
As NAYGN México Regional Lead, Rentería highlighted the NAYGN organization's mission to develop and support the next generation of nuclear professionals. She discussed NAYGN's role in advancing professional development, mentorship, networking opportunities, public outreach, and intergenerational knowledge transfer across the nuclear industry.
The presentation also showcased NAYGN as a collaborative platform that connects students, young professionals, universities, industry leaders, and public institutions throughout Mexico. Additionally, opportunities for future growth and engagement in the La Laguna region were discussed, including the potential development of new NAYGN chapter activities through the organization's established chapter formation process.
Through participation in events such as the National Engineering Congress, NAYGN continues to foster dialogue about the future of nuclear energy while strengthening the talent pipeline needed to support a reliable, innovative, and sustainable energy future.
Broader Application for the Region
A central message of the talk was that nuclear energy's value extends beyond power generation. For a region such as La Laguna — where industry, water availability, and energy needs intersect — advanced nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors, could in principle support reliable clean electricity, industrial process heat, water treatment and desalination, hydrogen production, and digital infrastructure such as data centers and high-performance computing. The presentation also noted that the nuclear sector's growth creates opportunities across a wide range of disciplines beyond nuclear engineering itself — including electrical, mechanical, civil, industrial, chemical, and environmental engineering, as well as mechatronics, automation, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, software development, project finance, regulatory affairs, science communication, logistics, procurement, and technical education.
Rentería concluded that La Laguna already has the industrial base, talent pool, and regional understanding of its water challenges needed as a starting point — and that realizing nuclear energy's potential as a platform for innovation, decarbonization, quality employment, water security, and energy sovereignty will require sustained collaboration among academia, industry, and government over the years ahead.
