The 2020 NAYGN Essay Contest has concluded!  The contest was open to students in grades 9-12.  The essay prompt for the 2020 Essay Contest was: Nuclear power has numerous advantages over other forms of power generation.  Write about the number one advantage you think nuclear power generation has over all other forms of electricity generation.

Thanks to all the entrants in this year’s contest!  The 2020 NAYGN Essay Contest Winners are:

FIRST PLACE:

Mariama Bah, a senior from Illinois!  Mariama was awarded a collection of books on nuclear power and radiation, the board game Power Grid, and a sweet HP Envy 15 x360 laptop!  Mariama’s essay nailed the many advantages that nuclear power has over other forms of electricity generation!  One stellar fact about nuclear from Mariama’s essay was that nuclear energy production offset “more than 476 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2019.  That’s the equivalent of removing 100 million cars from the road and more than all other clean energy sources combined.”  GO NUCLEAR!  Mariama also sent us this awesome hand drawing thanking NAYGN for the competition.  Artistic and knowledgeable about nuclear…Mariama’s got a bright future!

SECOND PLACE:

Caleb Brown, a junior from Texas!  Caleb was awarded a collection of books on nuclear power and radiation, the board game Power Grid, and a workhorse of a Chromebook in the Lenovo Flex 5!  Caleb’s essay highlighted how nuclear power is a superior choice to other forms of electricity generation for addressing both the increasing demand for energy as well as environmental concerns.  His essay started off with “The world faces gargantuan demand for energy and enormous environmental side effects.  Nuclear power is best positioned to solve these problems.”  Caleb, we couldn’t agree more!  Congratulations, Caleb!

THIRD PLACE:

Naeem Baig from Ontario!  Naeem was awarded a collection of books on nuclear power and radiation and the board game Power Grid!  Naeem’s essay made a fantastic point that nuclear energy “can be reliable in any scenario, whether it is a small community in the northern provinces of Canada or large cities with millions of residents.”  Naeem, also shared with us that he looks forward to working in this industry with such an awesome form of energy generation and hopes to work side by side with fellow NAYGN members in the future!  Naeem, just so you know, you’re already working right beside us by being an advocate for nuclear!  Thanks, Naeem!
